Letter to Ira Cohen from La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela, and Pandit Pran Nath

[Kathmandu]: np, 1980. Autograph letter, with original envelope addressed “IRA COHEN c/o Nepal Bank Ltd Kathmandu Nepal”. 7 3/4 x 5 1/4 in. Very good. Item #7935

A note left by La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela, and the Indian classical singer Pandit Pran Nath, for Ira Cohen at his bank in Kathmandu, in hopes that they might see each other while they were visiting Nepal. Young refers to the death of Angus MacLise, who had succumbed to illness in Kathmandu the previous June; he writes of MacLise’s “moksha,” the Sanskrit term for liberation from the cycle of rebirth, traditionally associated with those who have achieved enlightenment prior to death:

“Dear Ira, on the chance you may be here we are leaving this note. We are staying in Hotel Siddhartha, Kautipath, for maybe 10 to 15 days more before returning to Delhi and NY. Terry sent us the beautiful poem you wrote for Angus’ moksha—we were very moved. We hope to hear from you.”.
