O Povo Angolano E O Seu Braco Armado as Fapla Quebraram O Mito Do Mercenarismo [The Angolan People and Their Armed Faction FAPLA Broke the Myth of Mercenarism]

[Luanda, Angola]: Ministério da Informação de Angola, [1976]. Offset. 17 x 25 in. Text in Portuguese. Very good. Item #7791

Poster for the People’s Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola [Forças Armadas Populares
de Libertaçao de Angola (FAPLA)], the armed wing of the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola [Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA)], calling attention to the crimed of foreign mercenaries in Angola.

In a 1976 trial in Luanda, thirteen Western mercenaries were indicted on charges of war
crimes committed during the Angolan Civil War. Four of the mercenaries—three British and one American—were executed by firing squad. Nine others were sentenced to between sixteen and thirty years in prison. The Luanda trial sparked a worldwide debate over mercenary activities and whether mercenarism should be banned by international law.

Explaining his reasoning for not commuting the sentences of the mercenaries, President
Agostinho Neto stated, “Every Angolan remembers the vile and cruel behavior of the
mercenaries who have sown death and despair in African countries in return for pay, trying
n this way to put a brake on the higher interests of a people for a few coins.” As if echoing President Neto’s words, this poster depicts a rifle smashing a helmet from which US dollars and cents tumble out.
