[Denmark]: np, ca. late 1960s. Screenprint. 12 x 21 3/4 in. Text in Danish. Very good; lines from folding into sixths, bottom edge unevenly cut, chip at upper margin (approx. 1/2 x 1/4 in), and closed tears to upper and right margins, and across lower margin along crease lines. Item #7754
Constructivist-style poster from the underground rock music scene that emerged in Denmark in the late 1960s.
The wide range of musical experimentation and creativity in 1960s and ‘70s Denmark far outsized the country’s modest geographical footprint. During this period, Danish bands recorded psych rock, jazz fusion, and hard rock albums that championed progressive, countercultural ideas.
This poster is a détournement of a 1930 Soviet propaganda poster designed by Constructivist artist and pioneer of photomontage, Gustav Klutsis. The original poster, “We Will Repay the Coal Debt to Our Country,” features this photograph of three workers holding tools against a red background, there intended to promote industrialization as part of Stalin’s Five Year Plan.
