Poster published by the Young Socialist Alliance promoting the Young Socialist National Convention of 1969, a year which saw a continued surge in organizing and resistance in the United States.

The Young Socialist Alliance was the youth wing of the Socialist Workers Party, a Trotskyist party that split from the Socialist Party of America in 1937 due to the latter’s support for Stalin over and against Trotsky. Active throughout the Second World War and the Cold War, the party saw an influx in members and an intensification in activity during the United States’ radical 1968–1972 era. They attempted multiple electoral campaigns at the state and federal levels, with promotional materials circulating around the country, and formed coalitions with various other leftist and women’s groups throughout the United States. The party’s popularity, its outspoken support for Castro, and for Black liberation in the “integrated” South, provoked investigations by the FBI. A Church Committee report from 1976 revealed that the FBI initiated a COINTELPRO campaign against the party, making use of 1,300 informants between 1960 and 1976.
