An interesting study of the fakirs of India, Sufi holy men and women who renounce worldly possessions and survive on only what they can receive through alms. Though the fakirs are specifically Sufis, the work draws parallels to the other ascetic Hindu traditions throughout India. The work pays particular attention to the devotees' practices of self-injury and body piercing, which are illustrated throughout.
Hunt initially read the paper to London’s Osler Club on May 11, 1934, before it appeared in the St Bartholomew’s Hospital Journal in October, November and December 1934.
