Collection of Gay Novelty Singles from Camp Records
Hollywood: Camp Records, ca. mid-1960s. Eight 7-in. vinyl records in sleeves. 45 RPM. 7 x 7 in. Records and sleeves in used condition. Item #7248
Eight 1960s gay novelty singles released by Camp Records, a label that specialized in comedy albums produced for the gay market.
Camp Records issued ten singles and two LPs in the mid-1960s. With humorous titles like “I’d Rather Fight Than Swish,” “Old Fashioned Balls,” and “Homer the Happy Little Homo,” the label offered listeners a range of campy gay scenarios and tropes. Camp Records advertised their recordings in gay magazines like Vagabond and One. Moreover, the records include in-jokes, slang, and double entendres specific to the gay subculture of the 1960s.
The humor of these records carries over to their tongue-in-cheek credits and label numbers. When artists are credited, it is always under a jokey pseudonym such as Byrd E. Bath & the Gay Blades and B. Bubba. In addition, if read aloud, the label-issued numbers assigned to each record are themselves humorous references. For example, the number UR12, assigned to The Ballad of the Camping Woodcutter reads as “You are one too.”.
