Promotional copy These Are the Hits, You Silly Savage!!, a record of campy covers of recent hits from Teddy & Darrel (Ted Charach and Darrel Dee) performed in a stereotypically gay style and produced by record executive and future Republican Lieutenant Governor of California, Mike Curb.
One source claims that the record was produced not strictly for entertainment, but instead as part of an LAPD crackdown on Los Angeles’s gay community. According to this telling, the record was intended to bait homosexuals into buying it so the police could gather demographic data about the city’s gay population. Stocked at record stores throughout the city and available for mail order through advertisements in gay magazines, the police could identify where LA’s homosexuals lived based on which neighborhoods saw the most sales.
Whether or not this story is true, few copies of the record sold upon its release, foiling the LAPD’s anti-gay plot, if there ever was one.
