Call Me MISS-ter by the Pearl Box Revue Double LP
Englewood, NJ: Snake Eyes / All Platinum Record Co., [1972]. Two 12-in. vinyl records in gatefold sleeve. 12 x 12 in. Record and sleeve in used condition. Item #7243
Obscure double LP by drag cabaret act the Pearl Box Revue, featuring the talent of female impersonators Mr. Jaye Joyce, Mr. Clyddie McCoy, Mr. Tony La Frisky, and Mr. Dorian Corey and produced by The Coasters lead singer, Billy Guy.
The first disc, “At the Party,” is full of energetic gossip, giggling, and chitchat, while disc two, “The Serious Side Of Us,” is more subdued and infinitely more listenable.
One of the group’s members, Dorian Corey, would go on to become an important figure in Harlem’s drag ball scene and was featured in the 1990 documentary Paris is Burning. But following her death in 1993 from AIDS-related complications, a partially mummified body with a gunshot wound to the head was discovered among her belongings. The body was later identified as Robert Woley, who investigators determined must have been killed at least twenty years prior. Even today questions remain about the nature of the relationship between Corey and Woley, the circumstances surrounding Woley’s murder, and why the body was preserved rather than disposed of.
