Item #7033 Collection of Flyers from the 1970s Los Angeles Disco Scene

Collection of Flyers from the 1970s Los Angeles Disco Scene

Los Angeles: various, ca. 1970s. 12 flyers. Offset and mimeograph. From 5 ½ x 8 ½ in. to 8 ½ to 11 in. All very good to near fine. Item #7033

Collection of 12 flyers from the predominantly Black disco scene in Los Angeles spanning from mid to late 1970s. The flyers open a largely undocumented glimpse into a number of disco nightclubs, such as Club Mugen, Tropicana Club, and Tahitian Village. More prominently, they document an Annual Disco Cruise off the coast of Los Angeles, featuring mixes by Lee Bailey and Funky Damon. These parties often required “distinctive attire,” and also advertised funk music and live performances by artists such as Smoke Lightning and others. Most of the events in these flyers were produced by “B.I. Productions”, usually helmed by Daryl Harman; however, other producers include the R&B musician Al Johnson, who organized a “disco-buffet night in appreciation of the hostesses and hosts that volunteered their services for the Ninth Annual NAACP Image Awards,” an NAACP awards show dedicated to honoring outstanding Black performers in film, music, literature, and theater.

Remarkable documents of a lively and collaborative disco scene.
