The exceptionally rare first issue of the East Village Other. New York’s first underground newspaper of the 1960s, the publication emerged in October 1965, just a few months after the premiere of the Los Angeles Free Press. The issue features articles on the Watts Uprising and an impressive image of the Watts Arts Tower; an essay on the Kerista commune; reportage on Bob Dylan; and the effects of censorship on Ed Sanders’ publishing and the underground little magazines.

A scarce artifact of the 1960s New York underground.
