The Maverick was a short-lived New York newspaper, published between 1975 and 1979 by and for the city’s queer community. This issue includes many political and social features, including documentation of demonstrations to commemorate the gay victims of the Nazis, activism against ‘behavior modification’ programs in prisons, and a call for gay community support from Gloria Steinem’s Women’s Action Alliance. There are also personals ads, and an explicit photo spread of Bo, ‘Maverick of the Month.’

An illuminating artefact of the New York City gay community.
