Joseph Mitchell (1908–1996) wrote this story based on several old men from the Fulton Fish Market, which were combined into the titular character, Mr. Flood, who aspires to reach the age of one hundred fifteen on a diet of fish. The original version of this story appeared in The New Yorker in three parts in 1944 and 1945.
