Among the major writers of the 20th century Witold Gombrowicz is known for his novels, diaries, and plays which investigated themes of exile, totalitarianism, and existentialism in the 20th century. Operetka, or Operetta, was written over a span of 15 years, and was Gombrowicz’s final play. It investigated themes of authoritarianism and the insidious fascist ideology that during Gombrowicz’s lifetime was a constant menace. It was produced and staged by the Teatr Stu in 1976.
