Krakow: Teatr Stu, 1975. Jan Sawka. Item #POS132
Very good. Offset poster. 25 ¾ x 36 ½ in.
Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz, known as Witkacy, was among the most compelling figures of the 20th century avant-garde. A consummate experimenter who incessantly crossed disciplinary boundaries, he experimented widely in photography, painting and drawing, theatre, philosophy, and fiction between WWI and WWII. Among his most well-known works are the transgressive novel Insatiability, his 1933 work Narkotyka comprised of surrealistic portraits and drawings drawn and written under the influence of a wide array of narcotics (work which predicted similar experiments by Michaux among others), his fractured photographic self-portraits using mirrors, and the maniacally transgressive avant-garde play The Crazy Locomotive.
This poster is an alternative design by Jan Sawka for Teatr Stu’s 1975 production of the Crazy Locomotive.
