Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name that ran from November 27, 1968 - February 9, 1969, at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. The exhibition displayed more than 200 works that interpreted machines in attitudes ranging from devotion to a deep sense of pessimism and despair. The exhibit was curated by K.G. Pontus Hulten, the director of Moderna Museet in Stockholm at the time. Artists featured include Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Umberto Boccioni, Jacob Epstein, Man Ray, Raoul Hausmann, and more. From the MOMA press release, “Since the beginning of the mechanical age, some people have looked to machines to bring about progress toward Utopia; others have feared them as the enemies of humanistic values, leading only to destruction, Mr. Hulten observes. Most of these contradictory ideas persist, in one form or another, in the 20th century and find their reflection in art.”.
