Babs Gonzales was the Godfather of hip. He penned the song Oop-Pop-A-Da which was later made famous by Dizzy Gillespie and led his own successful career as an influential bebop singer. I Paid My Dues… is Babs’ autobiography detailing his rise to notoriety and as he put it, “I Paid My Dues is the best book anyone ever wrote about being black before it became a profession.”.
