This flyer, made five years before Johnson’s death, reproduces an image of the artist from his youth. The work comes from a time when Johnson was increasingly focusing on his age and mortality in his work. Indeed, the odd circumstances of his suicide have sometimes been viewed by critics as a final performance—and while that assertion seems difficult to deny or prove, this flyer shows how carefully Ray Johnson approached the study of his own life and death.
