Beginning with small format photos—generally 10 by 15 cm—Richter melds two distinct idioms, abstract painting and the figurative photograph, creating startling juxtapositions between realities. Musing on the “visual poetry” of the pieces, Siri Hustvedt quotes surrealist poet Paul Eluard: “the earth is as blue as an orange.”—such is the dissonance created in these prints.
