This assemblage publication was produced on the occasion of an exhibition of the same name at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Lisbon, Portugal. Organized by artist, director, and critic Ernesto de Sousa (b. 1921 – d. 1988), Alternativa Zero was a wide survey of Portuguese contemporary art, including such Portuguese artists as the sculptor Alberto Carneiro, Clara Maneres, poet E.M. Melo e Castro, and many others. It also featured several performances by New York based avant-garde theatre troupe The Living Theatre.
