Ulysses and Severin at D.C. Space [Nation of Ulysses] [Ian Svenonius]

[Washington, D.C.]: np, [1990]. Photomechanical reproduction on blue stock. 8 ½ x 11 in. Areas of discoloration at center; very good. Item #7089

Promotional flyer for concert featuring DC punk bands Ulysses (also known as Nation of Ulysses) and Severin at Washington’s D.C. Space on September 19, 1990.

This flyer is one of two designs used to promote the event. While this one features an abstracted photograph of Ulysses’ idiosyncratic vocalist Ian Svenonius, the alternate flyer includes a rose juxtaposed with a composite figure with the body of a man in a stars-and-stripes shirt and a pistol for a head.

Nation of Ulysses was Ian Svenonius’s first musical project. Formed in 1988 as “Ulysses,” they later changed their name to Nation of Ulysses and began promoting themselves as both a band and far-left political party. They called the home they shared “The Embassy” and published the zine Ulysses Speaks to explain and propagate their politics. Even the matching clothes they performed in was an element of their political philosophy. Although the seriousness of all this is up for debate, in his later projects, Svenonius continued developing his political line.
