Puerto Rican Obituary [inscribed to Tuli Kupferberg]

New York: Monthly Review Press, 1973. 108 pp. Third printing. 5 ½ x 8 in. Very good with slight soiling and edgewear to wrappers. Inscribed by Pedro Pietri “to my friend Tuli / Pedro Pietri” with notations to last page in the hand of Tuli Kupferberg. Item #6728

The first poetry collection from Pedrio Pietri, the “Nuyorican poet laureate,” Young Lords member, and cofounder of the Nuyorican Poets Café whose writing, activism, and organizing inspired both his contemporaries and subsequent generations of poets exploring oppositional poetics and Boricua identities.
Named for his landmark poem “Puerto Rican Obituary,” which was first performed as a spoken word piece at a Young Lords rally in 1969, this collection contains 32 poems and is a cornerstone of the Nuyorican cultural and intellectual movement.

A scarce example, inscribed to noted beat poet Tuli Kupferberg, with Kupferberg’s notation on rear fly paper.
