The Heroin Addict No. 6

New York: H.A. Production, 1980. Photocopied zine, side stapled to top edge. 7, [2] pp. 8 ½ x 11 in. Light crease across center from folding; otherwise near fine. Item #6121

One issue of photographer and filmmaker Richard Kern’s zine, The Heroin Addict: The Magazine with a Consistent Attitude, his earliest effort at making zines, circulating his work, and threading together a community of artists with similar thematic and aesthetic concerns.

The Heroin Addict featured art, collage, photography, poetry, and prose by Kern and friends. The zine drips bleakness and cynicism, anticipating his later work. Roughly 12 issues were published bi-monthly from 1979 to 1983; Kern renamed the magazine The Valium Addict later in 1981. This issue, no. 6, was published in October 1980, and includes contributions from S. Wilson, M. Houston, D. Stephenson, and an interview with Nico.

Scarce documents of the No Wave movement. No copies of The Heroin Addict on OCLC as of August 2022.
