Los Angeles, CA: Los Angeles Advocate, 1968. Offset printed on newsprint. Staplebound. 8 ½ x 11 in. 39pp. Near fine condition. Item #5878

Founded in 1967 by Richard Mitch as a response to the raids and subsequent demonstrations at the Black Cat, The Advocate expanded from a local newsletter to the longest-running LGBTQ publication in print. The Los Angeles Advocate was first published as the newsletter for gay rights activist group Personal Rights in Defense and Education (PRIDE) in Los Angeles. By early 1968, PRIDE was struggling to stay viable and Mitch, who used the pseudonym Dick Micharls, bought out the paper and continued to publish it independently. The Advocate was distributed at gay bars and establishments across Los Angeles and soon built up a large subscription circulation.

This issue contains an exclusive report by a gay person incarcerated at a California state hospital under the Mentally Disordered Sex Offender Act, editorials, articles on police brutality, personal ads, film and book reviews, and many local advertisements.
