The Gay Blade, later published as the Washington Blade, was one of the first gay newspapers in the country. Founded by DC Mattachine Society member Lili Vincez with Nancy Tucker, the paper began as a single sheet broadside distributed at gay bars and establishments. First appearing monthly in 1969, the newspaper evolved from its single sheet format into a multi-page newsletter in 1972, and morphed into a proper newspaper in the years that followed. An incredibly important moment in gay publishing and community building, The Gay Blade set the stage for gay community building and organization through newsletters and advertisements in print. This edition collects the first 6 single sheet issues, originally published from October 1969 to March 1970. Each sheet is Xeroxed on a different colored paper.
