Item #5836 Identity House

Identity House

[New York]: Identity House, nd. Size XS. Very good. Cropped and hand-sewn at bottom. Item #5836

T-shirt for the volunteer run LGBTQ peer counseling organization, the first of its kind in New York City, founded in 1971, cropped and hand-stitched by an unknown previous owner.

The group was inspired and started by some of the people involved with the Homosexual Community Counseling Center, though they sought a less clinical and more peer-oriented approach. A few years after its founding, a divide occurred when some members wanted to once again remove the peer approach and make all the counselors licensed psychotherapists. The more clinically-minded went on to found the Institute for Human Identity, and Identity House remained a peer counseling center. Identity House hosted workshops, conferences, and parties throughout the the 1970s, ‘80s, and ‘90s, worked closely with the Gay Men’s Health Crisis and groups at the height of the AIDS epidemic, and continues to operate today - fifty years later.
