Issue of Newsweek magazine with cover story on hippie culture in New York, covering the murders of Linda Fitzpatrick, an 18 year old from Greenwich Connecticut and James ‘Groovy’ Hutchinson, a young man from Rhode Island, both living in the East Village in hippie squats. The greusome double murder created a landslide of news coverage and widespread panic amongst families of young people who had left their suburban homes to live the hippie lifestyle in the city. The regular cautionary reporting on the dark side and dangers of free love, living rough, taking drugs, and more amongst a backdrop of poverty and gang activity.
