“Brian Weil: Photographs 1981-1982” at Home Alone 2 Gallery Exhibition Poster

New York: Home Alone 2, 2014. Offset. 36 x 20 ½ in. Near fine. Item #5702

Exhibition poster for a show of Brian Weil photographs at Leo Fitzpatrick and Nate Lowman’s short-lived gallery Home Alone 2 in Lower Manhattan.

Brian Weil (1954-1996) was a photographer and activist whose work focused on marginalized, insular, and subcultural communities. His subjects include transgender sex workers, ACT UP activists and LGBTQ people living during the AIDS epidemic, crime scene photography in Miami, the Hasidic community of Williamsburg, and fetish and sex parties. Weil practiced photography as a means to become deeply and intimately involved with his subjects and was a community organizer and activist as well as an artist, as a member of ACT UP and other AIDS organizations and founder of multiple needle exchange programs for drug users across New York City communities. Weil’s photographic style is marked by physical manipulation of film, creating grainy and obfuscated shots through re-photographing images from film strips, blowing up, overexposing, and sometimes scratching film.

A scarce poster documenting the recent renewed critical interest in an unapologetically underground artist.
