Reggae S.F. Bay Area Calendar March 1981

San Francisco: Universal Life Church Order of Olufunmi, 1981. Xerox. Single sheet measuring 11 x 17 in. folded to produce a 4pp booklet. Very good. Item #5373

Calendar of reggae concerts in the Bay Area in March 1981, including reggae stores and planned radio play of reggae music in the upcoming month. Published by the Order of Olufunmi, who were instrumental in the popularization of reggae in California - this calendar also includes writings from an anonymous member(s) of Olufunmi with information and thoughts about various venues in the area, and the state of the genre. From the first page: "Artists attitudes, lack of financial support, to non-profit oriented cultural promotions and fast rising costs, are pushing our culture further into the hands of big money and big business."

Musicians featured in the calendar include Leory Smart, Joe Higgs, the Titans, Odisha Paradox, Raskidus, Roots Connection, Reggae Jackson, Contrabantiempo, the Harmonics, Motherless and the Merry Knights, Caribbean Reggae All-Stars, Rim Obeng, Kasa, Session, Umoja, Earl Zero, I-World and the Tasmanian Devils. Venues include the American Indian Center, Ashkenaz, La Pena, Cabo’s, the Inn of the Beginning, the Stone, and more.

A scarce artifact from the early days of reggae’s popularization in the United States, illuminating the distribution and promotional methods of the time and thoughts and fears about the coming commercialization.
