Started in 1969 by Steve Lawrence and Peter Hujar, Newspaper [later The Picture Newspaper] was a conceptual art paper without words - dedicated to photography by New York legends such as Richard Avedon, Ralph Gibson, Annie Leibovitz, Bill Cunningham, Peter Hujar, Man Ray and stars such as Mick Jagger, Divine, Patti Smith, Grace Jones, and more. With boundary pushing graphic design and layouts by Lawrence and Sanchez with a queer sensibility and emphasis on media subversion, this paper is scarce and vibrant.
This issue features two parts, and the newspapers’ most iconic covers, part one features the Richard Bernstein Guggenheim Museum image for August 1975, and part two features Divine illustrated by John Matthews in animal print for December 1975-January 1976. Inside includes a spread shot by Leee Black Childers of Jayne Mansfield and Cherry Vanilla, a collage juxtaposing a Sylvia Plachy photo of Lily Tomlin’s birthday party with a Donald Duck still, and much more. The final issues of this paper.
