The Last Video Tapes of Marcel Duchamp

New York: The Kitchen Center for Video and Music, 1977. Offset printed postcard. 4 x 6 in. Near fine condition. Item #5105

An invitation card to one of The Kitchen’s most infamous performance pieces, in which video artist John Sanborn imagined Marcel Duchamp’s foray into video art.

Announced as a series of rare tapes by Duchamp, the films were actually an elaborate performance orchestated by Sanborn with help from Hannah Wilke, Shigeko Kubota, and Russell Connor. The doctored photograph on this card, and the invitation itself, extended the ruse and hundreds of people attended the opening believing they would see Duchamp's previously unseen work.
