Åke Hodell, a Swedish fighter pilot who miraculously survived a freak accident turned poet, writer and artist, created work with an increasingly political and anarchic aesthetic during the middle of the twentieth century. This book CA 36715 (J) is the progeny of Orderbuch published a year earlier. These pseudo-documentarian textual pieces are a direct commentary of events related to the Holocaust. Orderbuch, translated to the word “order” depicts compositions of numbers representing prisoners of Nazi concentration camps, followed by the letter J in parentheses for Jew. CA36715 (J) is the last number in the piece that does not get crossed out, and also the title of this second book in which Hodell re-creates the diary of a KZ prisoner. As the pages are turned, the handwriting is increasingly illegible, conceptually insinuating the extinction of this person’s life.
