Ed Van der Elsken was a Dutch street photographer and filmmaker. In 1956, he published his first book titled Love on the Left Bank, which was a documentation of his bohemian friends and lifestyle during the time he lived in Paris. After some time being a world traveler and publishing Sweet Life, Elsken settled back in Amsterdam in the early 1960's. He would go to local markets and amusement parks to document children playing, young love, and elderly meet ups. In 1979, Elsken released his book titled Amsterdam! which was a collection of his photographs taken in his home town from the 1960's to the late 1970's. Ed Van der Elsken is now recognized as one of the most important photographers from Holland in the 20th century. In 1990, he died with hundreds of unpublished prints and negatives that did not make it to the Amsterdam book. This book reveals all of his hidden treasures that defined the Dutch identity during the 1960s.
