Founded by W.E.B. Du Bois, Edward Strong, and Louis Burnham in Spring 1961, Freedomways ran until 1985 as the premier journal for African-American political and cultural thought. Early issues were edited by Shirley Graham Du Bois; starting with Winter 1964, Esther Jackson is Managing Editor and John Henrik Clarke, Associate Editor.
No publisher credited for Vol. 1, No. 1, all others credited to Freedomways Associates, Inc. Each octavo, printed wraps. Later issues illustrated with black and white photographs and drawings. Good to very good with shelf wear and soling to first couple issues. Subscription card ripped from last page of issue 1 and some separation to binding of issue two. Else very good.
Freedomways, Spring 1961 [Vol. 1, No. 1]. Described on the cover as the “Quarterly Review of the Negro Freedom Movement,” this issue opens, just after the table of contents, with the salutation “Hail Workers of all Lands on this May Day!” followed by an introduction to the journal’s ideas and goals and an essay by W.E.B. Du Bois.
