This early issue of Roctober is an illustrated history of the little-known garage rock band The Monks, a band made up of frustrated American G.I.’s stationed in Germany in the early 60’s. Known for their use of feedback, uncouth lyrics (most famously “I hate you...but call me”) and monk style haircuts and friar garb, the Monks gained cult fame as many garage rock bands did: long after their prime in retrospect, when examining the underground foundations for famous punk bands of the 70’s and 80’s. In addition to Jake Austen’s drawn interpretation of the Monks’ story, Roctober #13 includes three loose packets of pages, all press coverage of the release of the book Black Monk Time (1993), co-written by one of the founding members of the Monks, Eddie Shaw.
