Unsound is a cult fanzine based in San Francisco which ran from 1983 to 1987. Although the zine covers a wide range of music and art, Unsound was mainly focused on the experimental genres emerging at this time, i.e., industrial and new wave, and genres like punk and noise that were experiencing massive shifts and changes. The magazine was edited and published by William Davenport, an experimental musician and performance artist in his own right. Now known mostly for his work as a documentary filmmaker and autism activist, Davenport formed and performed in the noise band Problemist in 1980, playing with the band for 10 years before moving on in 1990. Davenport recently merged his current work and past by releasing four short films inspired by the zine entitled Unsound Redux, which discuss and document cassette culture, zine creators, a new generation of punks and the 2013 Saint Petersburg Noise Festival.
This issue of Unsound features an interview with avant-garde musician Remko Scha, an early interview with Thurston Moore, live show reviews of NON, Brides of Christ II, theorizing about “oppositional music” and more.
