Archie Bell (1944 – ) born in Henderson, TX, moved to Houston with his family when he was four months old. He was singing and performing by age ten, inspired by both his mother and by such legendary performers as Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke. The Drells first got together while all were still in junior high. Local Houston DJ Skipper Lee Frazer, and in 1968 they had their first national number one hit, “Tighten Up,” which sold over 200,000 records.
Successful throughout the seventies on both the Atlantic and Philadelphia International labels, Archie Bell and the Drells went their separate ways in 1980. Bell continues to perform to this day, and if he comes to your town — there’s some old school Houston action, right there.
